Army Sgt. Carlos J. Gil

Company, 181st Transportation Battalion, Mannheim, Germany; killed Feb. 18 by an
improvised explosive device in Humaniyuh, Iraq.

Rest In Peace
Orlando Sentinel - Carlos
J. Gil was planning to leave the Army, his family said. It was difficult being
away from his wife, and he missed watching his 4-year-old daughter grow up.
In January, he was sent to Iraq for the third time, his mother-in-law, Carmen
Alicea of Kissimmee, said.
On Friday, Gil, 30, died in Humaniyuh, Iraq, from "injuries sustained from an
improvised explosive device detonation," the Department of Defense announced
late Sunday. He was a sergeant assigned to the 377th Transportation Company,
181st Transportation Battalion, in Mannheim, Germany.
His family is confused by what caused his death, Alicea said. She said Gil's
wife, Farah Lee Gil, 25, is getting conflicting stories.
"We're not quite sure," Alicea said. "[His wife, Farah Gil] says he was the
truck driver, and they told her that it was like a missile that hit him. Then
they said it was a mine -- like a bomb underground -- so we don't know."
Alicea said the Gils met in Orlando when they were both cleaning offices. They
have been together for about seven years and have a daughter, Jalissa.
Most recently, they were living on an Army base in Kansas.
Alicea said Gil's parents live in Orlando and are devastated by their son's
death. His parents could not be reached for comment early today.
"They're heartbroken. He was their second son," she said.
